For Immediate Release Contact: Northern Gifts Ltd. RCMP Plush Recall Notice Burnaby, BC, November 17, 2008: Over the last decade, Northern Gifts has manufactured and distributed ornamental plush products with a replication of the RCMP uniform. These products have been sold as collector and souvenir items and are labeled as not suitable for children under 3 years of age. The products have been sold mainly in souvenir gifts shops and are not available in toy shops. The RCMP line was not designed as a toy nor has it been marketed to young children. Based on the Health Canada’s current policies, they have deemed the Northern Gifts Ltd’s line of RCMP plush products to be toys and have further deemed that the line must conform to toy regulations for children 3 years and younger. It is important to note that Northern Gifts Ltd. has never received a report or claim of injury related to these or any of our products. As a result of various tests conducted by Health Canada, it was found that in some cases decorations on the uniform were not in compliance with current regulations as they are applied to toys. The belts tested were found to have higher than allowable content of lead for toys. If small children were to suck on the belt or eat it, lead could be ingested. In some cases, the buttons were found to detach from the uniforms when pulled with a force of up to 10 pounds. The buttons, if detached, could present a choking hazard for small children. Health Canada also tested a random selection of our products, and each of these items all passed the testing. As a result of the above tests, the Company is recalling its line of RCMP products. As there are other makers of RCMP plush, before you contact us, please check the sewn tag to ensure that you have Northern Gifts’ product. If you are a consumer who has purchased a Northern Gifts Ltd. RCMP plush animal: Please have an adult remove the entire uniform and discard (except the hat). If you would like a replacement uniform sent to you, return it Northern Gifts Ltd. including your name and address. We are currently sourcing new uniforms and will send you a replacement when they become available. Please check the sewn tag to ensure that you have Northern Gifts Ltd. product.
